Sad, but inevitable. To me, it was well and truly dead after I saw a bunch of "Tink"-themed merchandise in the stores, instead of "Disney Fairies".
The unfortunate thing is, I hear the changes were made due to poor merchandise sales- the movies were doing just fine. Going to Toys R Us and Disney Stores, I've found the Fairy merch was often VERY sub-par compared to the usual Disney stuff- think that if they'd put more of an effort into making the Fairies an all-ages thing (the merch is REALLLLLLY focused towards 3-5 year old girls), the line might have survived.
Yeah, it's really sad how this ended. Things first seemed off to me when I got the Legend of the NeverBeast DVD and there wasn't a preview for the next installment in the series like there usually was. There wasn't even anything about another movie in the DVD case. So I just thought they'd skip a year or something. Then, they didn't even bother updating the Disney Fairies website.
In my opinion, the advertising for the series is partly to blame. Sure, they had music videos playing on Disney Channel, and even a TV series (it was just the movies split up into 30-minute segments) on Disney Junior, but I've asked around, and a LOT of people don't know that there's more than just one TinkerBell movie. Some people aren't even aware that there's more than just one fairy!
