"Rani is special. There's no other fairy like her."
-Tinker Bell

Rani in the Mermaid Lagoon is the fifth book in the series of Disney Fairies chapter books.

Plot

Rani is a water-talent fairy and can do wonderful things with water. She is also the only fairy in Pixie Hollow without wings. She had to cut them off to save Never Land. When she tries to put the large water jet on top of the Fairy Dance fountain, a job she is famous for, she cannot do it without her wings. Rani is devastated and leaves Pixie Hollow to find a place she belongs. During her journey, she makes friends with the Never Mermaids and seahorses. They welcome her into their homes and she gets a glimpse into what her life would be like if she did not live in Pixie Hollow.

Like many early chapter books, this one features a scene in which Vidia arrives to taunt the main character. Here, she shows mock sympathy for Rani after causing a disaster at a dance celebration (Brother Dove's size caused her to crash into other fairies, ruining things), adding "It's not your fault that without your wings, you're useless!"

Rani runs off to live with the mermaids, but finds them flighty and unsupportive. While they are friendly, they have her engage in a pointless, dangerous quest for a lost bauble (which they immediately forget about as soon as she leaves for it, and then discard it once she brings it back). One assumes that Rani is now her property. And when Rani suggests a party, they laugh at the very idea of getting them to actually work for the set-up. Mermaids, it seems, are too used to immediate pleasures, and thus make terrible friends.

When Rani arrives back in Pixie Hollow, it turns out that her friends had missed her terribly, and she finds new purpose in staying where she is.
